Troubleshoot campaign attribution gaps

Attribution gaps happen when traffic arrives without the expected UTMs, buyers use the wrong link type, or reports are compared with mismatched filters. The issue is often in the link path, not in Campaigns itself.

Use this guide when Campaigns looks empty, source names are inconsistent, or Financial Overview shows revenue that Campaigns does not group the way you expect.

Common attribution gap patterns

SymptomLikely cause
Campaigns show low revenueWrong link, missing UTMs, or date range too narrow
Sales exist but campaign is emptyBuyer used untracked or generic checkout link
Source names are inconsistentUTM naming changed mid-campaign
Affiliate sale appears as owner trafficAffiliate link not used
Pixel platform differs from CampaignsExternal delay or separate tracking setup. See pixels.
Support link polluted campaign dataSupport-agent link used for campaign traffic

What to review first

AreaWhy it matters
Exact checkout link sharedAttribution starts at the link path
Link typeOwner, affiliate, support, and upgrade links behave differently
UTM valuesCampaign reporting depends on consistent source, medium, and campaign naming
Date rangeCampaigns and Sales must align
Business workspaceData may exist in another business
Product accessRestricted users may not see all records

Investigation workflow

  1. Confirm the correct business workspace.

  1. Identify the exact checkout link shared in the campaign.

  1. Open the link as a buyer and inspect UTM values when possible.

  1. Compare Campaigns, Sales, and Financial Overview with the same date range.

  1. Check whether the purchase used affiliate, support, upgrade, or owner link type.

  1. Review pixel, GTM, or GA4 only after the link path looks correct.

  1. Fix naming conventions before new traffic starts, not only after launch.

  1. Collect the link, UTMs, buyer email, and sale date before escalation.

Prevention habits

  • Create tracked checkout links before ads go live.
  • Keep source, medium, and campaign naming consistent.
  • Separate owner, affiliate, support, and upgrade links in launch documentation.
  • Test one purchase per major campaign path.
  • Document UTM conventions for the launch team before paid traffic starts.

Best practices

  • Fix link issues before increasing ad spend.
  • Compare Campaigns with Sales using aligned filters.
  • Review missing data troubleshooting when records exist in Sales but not Campaigns.
  • Validate Facebook pixel after UTMs and links are correct.
  • Audit funnel and embed paths when attribution breaks only on upsell steps.

Common mistakes

  • Changing UTMs mid-campaign without documenting the break.
  • Assuming pixel data should match Campaigns one to one.
  • Blaming Campaigns before checking which link the buyer actually used.
  • Comparing Financial Overview and Campaigns with different filters.
  • Investigating webhooks before confirming the checkout link.

FAQ

Why does Financial Overview show revenue but Campaigns does not?

The sale may lack usable UTM values or used a link type that Campaigns does not group the way you expect. Inspect sale origin and the link first in Sales.

Can support links affect attribution?

Yes. Support-agent and short links should be managed so they do not overwrite campaign ownership by accident.

Where do affiliate attribution disputes fit?
