Use UTM naming conventions

Consistent UTMs make Campaigns readable and reduce attribution disputes between marketing, finance, support, and affiliate partners.

UTMs do not replace good checkout link hygiene. They organize traffic once the correct link type is already in use.

When naming conventions matter most

SituationWhy consistency helps
Multi-channel launchesAds, email, and partners need separate readable sources
Finance reviews campaign ROIFinancial Overview comparisons stay cleaner
Support investigates missing attributionTeams can recognize campaign names quickly
Affiliate and owner traffic run togetherWrong link type still breaks attribution even with good UTMs
Relaunch or evergreen campaignsPrevents duplicate names with different meanings

Convention rules

  • Pick lowercase or camelCase and stay consistent across the team.
  • Avoid spaces; use hyphens or underscores.
  • Do not change naming mid-campaign without a plan and documentation.
  • Separate owner, affiliate, and support link naming.
  • Document the convention before creating custom campaign links.
  • Keep campaign windows obvious in the name when relaunching similar offers.

Launch workflow

  1. Define naming rules before creating links.
  2. Share the convention with ads, email, affiliate, and support teams.
  3. Create custom campaign checkout links with UTMs.
  4. Store link, UTMs, offer, and owner in a launch sheet.
  5. Test one purchase per major campaign path.
  6. Review Campaigns after first traffic.
  7. Compare with Sales if attribution looks incomplete.
  8. Update the convention doc only between campaigns, not during one.

Naming patterns that work well

Partner-specific owner campaignsAvoid using owner UTMs for partner traffic
Support-assisted recoveryUse support link naming rules, not campaign UTMs

What to verify after launch

CheckWhy it matters
Campaign names appear consistently in CampaignsReadable reporting
Sales show expected origin valuesHelps campaign attribution gap investigations
Affiliates are not using owner campaign linksProtects partner credit
Support did not reuse campaign links in ticketsSee short links and support tools
Date ranges match across reportsReconcile Dashboard and Finance when needed

Best practices

  • Publish the convention in one internal doc before every major launch.
  • Keep campaign names stable for the full campaign window.
  • Use utm_content for creative tests instead of inventing new campaign names daily.
  • Pair UTMs with Facebook pixel or GA4 validation, not instead of them.
  • Review messy reports after funnel changes. See duplicate funnels.

Common mistakes

  • Changing utm_campaign halfway through a promotion.
  • Letting each media buyer invent a new source name.
  • Using owner UTMs on affiliate links.
  • Assuming pixel data will match Campaigns one to one.
  • Investigating webhooks before confirming link and UTM values.

FAQ

Do UTMs work without custom campaign links?

UTMs are most useful when applied intentionally to tracked checkout links. Random or missing UTMs create reporting gaps.

What if two teams use the same campaign name?

Split by source or medium, or add a team prefix. Duplicate names make Campaigns hard to trust.

Can support traffic use campaign UTMs?

Support should use support-agent links according to role policy, not owner campaign naming.
